EJP Denounces Rebelyn's Gruesome Death

Press Statement
March 10, 2009
The Exodus for Justice and Peace condemns in the strongest possible terms the abduction, torture, rape and killing of Rebelyn Pitao, 20, a sub-teacher of St. Peter's College in Davao City. Rebelyn is the daughter of NPA commander Parago of the Pulang Bagani Company operating in the Davao City hinterlands. What happened to Rebelyn shows the desperation and barbarity of the mastermind of this gruesome murder.
We have every reason to believe that only an organized, well-oiled institution and the militarist motive to pin-down Rebelyn's father come 2010 could be behind this most condemnable act.
Attacks on civilians like what happened to Rebelyn continue to hound us today under the Arroyo administration. We believe that this is part of the Arroyo government's counter-insurgency program that has already victimized almost a thousand workers, farmers, professionals, church peoples; and almost two million since 2001.
Under the present military campaign of the Arroyo administration called Oplan Bantay Laya II, tragic deaths done by death squads, fierce militarization resulting in displacement in the countryside, attacks on our civil liberties continue to challenge our collective rights as a people.
We are alarmed with what happened to Rebelyn and to countless other civilians who are victimized by the government's drive to wipe-out the New People's Army come 2010.
We hold the Arroyo government accountable for the death of Rebelyn and countless others and the various human rights violations resulting from Oplan Bantay Laya 2.
We are here to demand justice, and to push for an impartial investigation on the case.
