Union president survives slay attempt during ISM in Compostela

The Exodus for Justice & Peace received word from a contingent of the International Solidarity Mission in Compostela that around around 11:30 earlier today (May 16), Liza Alo, president of the Packing Plant union survived an ambush by three armed men aboard a motorcycle. Alo was on her way home from the ISM activity held at a gym in Brgy. Osmena, Compostela town when the unidentified armed men tailed her and opened fire. Alo was earlier at the gym accompanying two colleagues who were victims of human rights abuses in the area.
The ISM had included the area of Compostela town to investigate the incidence of trade union repression among union workers of banana plantations in the area. The ISM contingent included members of the Kilusang Mayo Union, foreign and national delegates and Rep. Joel Maglungsod of Anakpawis partylist. More than a hundred attended the ISM’s medical mission and psychosocial therapy in Barangay Osmena, Compostela.
